Dell and Meta partner to bring Llama 2 open source AI to enterprise
„We believe in open innovation, and we do not want to place undue restrictions on how others can use our model,“ a Meta spokesperson said in a statement. „However, we do want people to use it responsibly. This is a bespoke commercial license that balances open access to the models with responsibility and protections in place to help address potential misuse.“ Industry experts compare Llama’s positioning in generative AI to that of Linux, the open source rival to Microsoft Windows, in the PC operating system market. Just as Linux software made its way into corporate servers worldwide and became a key piece of the modern internet, Meta sees Llama as the potential digital scaffolding supporting the next generation of AI apps. „We’d like the firm to discuss its latest plans for the metaverse, and whether it will relaunch with its aggressive investments on that front. We think artificial intelligence is an important component of the metaverse,“ Morningstar said in a recent note. Next year, the company will be hiring most in AI, monetization, metaverse and reality labs, and regulatory compliance needs.
Shares initially jumped in after-hours trading, but dipped into the red as the earnings call progressed. Meta CFO Susan Li said the company has seen „softer“ ad spend so far in the fourth quarter coinciding with the Israel-Hamas war. Li warned that 2024 will be volatile in terms of the broader economy, and the company is exposed to that as an advertising giant. The cases are the latest in a string of legal actions against social media companies on behalf of children and teens. Library staff worked together to develop a simple new service—they added a “Get Help Finding a Digital Copy” button to their library catalog.

Meta claims to overcome the complex problem of removing rapidly-evolving harmful content by using proprietary self-supervised learning techniques and more efficient FSL models. The company asserts that its model drastically data collection and model development, interaction, evaluation, and deployment. In a podcast interview, Pesenti discussed some of the purported uses of AI in this regard. Pesenti claims that Meta is analyzing text and image data for harmful content using what seems to be natural language understanding (NLU) and computer vision models. One method by which Meta is supposedly using NLU and computer vision to combat harmful content is a machine learning application called “few-shot learning,” or FSL.
The boss of Google DeepMind pushed back on a claim from Meta’s artificial intelligence chief alleging the company is pushing worries about AI’s existential threats to humanity to control the narrative on how best to regulate the technology. The Meta AI Blog leaves no stone unturned when it comes to exploring the intricacies of AI. From in-depth tutorials on machine learning algorithms to detailed analyses of cutting-edge research papers, the blog provides a wealth of information for both beginners and experts in the field. At a share price of $288.73, Meta shares trade at 19.9x forward earnings and 6.2x sales. Revenues during the first quarter grew at 6% year-over-year, reversing three quarters of declining sales. Zuckerberg said in May that Meta now uses AI to determine what ads are shown on Facebook and Instagram.
Revolutionizing Web: Meta’s AI Takeover
On-premises deployments using open-source large language models such as Llama 2 offer customers better value over time with predictable costs and complete control over their data, reducing risk to security and IP leakage and ensuring compliance with regulations. While Meta’s license makes Llama 2 free for many, it’s still a limited license that doesn’t meet all the requirements of the Open Source Initiative (OSI). As outlined in the OSI’s Open Source Definition, open source is more than just sharing some code or research.

Today we’re introducing the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC), which we believe is among the fastest AI supercomputers running today and will be the fastest in the world once fully built out in mid-2022. AI can currently perform tasks like translating text between languages and helping identify potentially harmful content, but developing the next generation of AI will require powerful supercomputers capable of quintillions of operations per second.

Overall Llama 2 has been a stellar success with approximately 30 million downloads of the open source technology in the last 30 days, according to Joe Spisak, head of generative AI open source at Meta. Dell today announced that it is adding support for Llama 2 models to its lineup of Dell Validated Design for Generative AI hardware, as well as its generative AI solutions for on-premises deployments. The open source Llama 2 large language model (LLM) developed by Meta is getting a major enterprise adoption boost, thanks to Dell Technologies. Andreessen helped in 1993 to write Mosaic, the base code for the Netscape web browser. After Netscape was acquired in 1998 by AOL for $4.3 billion, Andreessen and his partner Ben Horowitz became noted angel investors in the San Francisco bay area. „Mark Zuckerberg is, just like Elon, a bit of a lightning rod when it comes to political technology,“ Ariga said.
RSC will help Meta’s AI researchers build better AI models that can learn from trillions of examples; work across hundreds of different languages; seamlessly analyze text, images and video together; develop new augmented reality tools and more. Ultimately, the work done with RSC will pave the way toward building technologies for the next major computing platform — the metaverse, where AI-driven applications and products will play an important role. Organizations are increasingly taking a human-centered approach to adopting Generative AI models, enabling their teams to innovate and increase productivity. Use cases such as chatbots, virtual assistants and code development require enterprises to train models on their own proprietary data. Public cloud solutions can create uncertainty with data sovereignty concerns, security challenges and unpredictable costs.
